News

mattMatthew Walklin

It is with great sadness that we learnt of Matthew Walklin's passing. Matthew coped with his cancer with a strength that belied his age. Our thoughts are with his family at this very sad time.

Jim Brooks-Dowsett of Pura Vida Boardriders, the local windsurf store, wrote the following:

"I've had some very sad news this week that Matt Walklin, Mike's son from Gwent Adventures passed away peacefully on Sunday night.  Our best wishes are with Mike and his family to deal with such a difficult time.

Many of you may have met Matt over the years, one of the most friendly and enthusiastic lad's I've known and a very keen windsurfer as you can imagine!  Several years ago he was diagnosed with cancer far before his time, only in his early 20's, which came as a huge shock to him and his family.  Matt has spent the past few years enduring a gruesome battle and survived some heavy treatment against the odds.  In the end the cancer just kept coming back, and very sadly the battle was lost this past weekend, but not before Matt got to see Wales win the grand slam with his mates!!

Matt is a great example of someone who didn't let things get him down no matter what, and a harsh reminder of how fragile we all are considering what a healthy life he led.  Mike turned his illness into an inspiration to join the cause that so many of us support in 'Windsurfing 4 Cancer Research'. In the modern world cancer will affect many of us, and people we know, so it's more important now than ever.

This year we will dedicate our efforts and fundraising events to W4CR.org in memory of Matt, and I'm sure his story will inspire many more people to take part."

Our thoughts go out to the Walklin Family.

Beneficaries 2011

The Trustees have made the following donations totalling £60,000 using the funds raised by Sunrise Sunset 2011, other windsurfing fundraising challenges and the W4CR Team who ran in The Great South Run.

  1. £12K to Bobby Moore Fund/Cancer Research UK a clinical trial to improve bowel cancer treatment. Read more about this project >
  2. £12K to Cancer Research UK: Skin Cancer : predicting the future. Read more about this project >
  3. £12K to Breast Cancer Care which will include funding the telephone support work as provided by their volunteers.
  4. £12K to Macmillan Cancer Support. £12,000 could pay for five Macmillan cancer information and support officers for a month, meaning more people affected by cancer will have someone to answer their questions and talk to about their concerns.
  5. £12K to The Prostate Cancer Charity to support their awareness work.

This is a greater amount than any previous year. Thank you to all the fund raisers and supporters for helping to make a difference. Since W4CR started in 2009, we have now distributed a total of £130,200 to worthy cancer causes.

A charity formed by windsurfers to raise cancer awareness and so promote early diagnosis and healthy lifestyles, to reduce the incidence of the disease. And through specific projects raise funds for cancer research, education and support (see Objectives in "about W4CR").
